Dora Maclellan Brown Christian Priority Fund

The Board of Directors of the Chattanooga Christian Community Foundation makes grants to Chattanooga area ministries and organizations that are meeting both the physical and spiritual needs of citizens of Chattanooga.  A national ministry based in Chattanooga may be eligible if they also have an emphasis upon meeting real needs in this area.  A non-Chattanooga based ministry may be eligible if they have a physical presence in Chattanooga (local staff representation), and are using that presence to ministry, physically and spiritually, to citizens of Chattanooga.

We get excited when we are able to assist Chattanooga ministries meet the needs of Chattanoogans.  We look for those organizations and ministries which are meeting people in the ditches and gutters of life, extending a hand to help them out of that ditch or that gutter, dusting them off, giving them a hug, helping them get back on their feet physically, and then, most importantly, using that as a springboard to meet them where they are spiritually.  It's not just enough to meet their need for physical food, without sharing with them about the Bread of Life.  It's not enough to meet their physical thirst without sharing about the Living Water.  Conversely, we believe it's not going to do much good to preach to them if we haven't shown them we care about them physically, as well.  We love to support those ministries which have "earned the right to be heard."

The reason our Board Grant focus is upon Chattanooga is very simple;  these grants are made as a living legacy to Dora Maclellan Brown, who so loved this city and the people in it, and left a charge for our Board to continue supporting work in this city in her name.  We aren't large enough to be able to give to everyone who asks.  The geographical limitations help our Board focus our giving in this region, which is defined primarily as Cleveland, TN to Dayton, TN to Dalton, GA.

The mandate to meet both physical and spiritual needs helps us focus on those who are responding as we believe that Jesus did when he walked this Earth.   We never see a picture of Jesus in the Scripture waiving his hands over the crowd and healing them en masse.  Instead, we see a picture of a Savior who was never too busy to meet people one-on-one, interact with them, learn about them, and then heal them.   Certainly He could have waived His hand and healed the crowds as a whole; He was fully God, and had the power to do so.  We are also aware, however, that every single person that Jesus healed eventually died; and if they died without taking advantage of the personal interaction they had with the God of the Universe to place their faith and trust in Him, alone, for their salvation, then His healing was, for them, in vain.  That is why we believe so strongly in a marriage of the physical and spiritual outreaches, and look forward with anticipation to being able to support Chattanooga ministries which are meeting needs in this way.
The project or work for which funds are requested must exhibit a high probability for success, a qualified staff and responsible board of directors, financial accountability with apparent planning and goal-setting skills in place, and a true need for such funds.

No grants are made to individuals for any purpose.  Grants will not be awarded to support endowment funds, capital projects, previously incurred deficit incurred from a project or operating budget, special internal projects of individual churches, equipment, supplies, fellowships, sabbaticals, study grants, or loans.  Relatives of board members of the Chattanooga Christian Community Foundation are not eligible for funding.
Applicants receiving funds from the Foundation must submit a report to the Foundation upon the completion of the project or at the end of the organization's administrative year, whichever is appropriate, showing exactly how funds were spent. Applicants receiving funds from the Foundation agree to return to the Foundation any part of the Grant which is not spent for the above stated purpose.

The Board meets six times per year, in February, April, June, August, October, and December.  Grant requests are due to the Foundation office on the first day of the month of the Board meeting, with the exception of the December meeting.   The table below shows applicable deadlines.
